my rainy day jobs

PostAuthor: millzee on Fri Jul 30, 2010 10:19 am

I got board and made up a raised wing mount so the wing won't keep hitting the body and cracking it, I think it'll be tough but just to make sure I made some support braces to help with solid impacts, whilest at it I decided to make up a new rear bumper and get rid of the plastic one utilizing the skid plate, then I polished all the alluminium. Gotta get better weather and a new ring and pinion before I go nuts!!!!

Cool looking bumper, man. I think a nice rear bumper comes in handy to us bashers when the truck flips end over end or cartwheels..seems to happen to me quite a bit #-o .

Yeh, I'm not going to land big jumps and back flips everytime so the bumpers are a must for me to, it's still poor weather today so I might look at making up a support knuckle to strengthen the bumper and maybe rig up a front bumper too, I'll see how I go and post some pic's tonight.

You need to put something in between the bumper and the truck or risk pulling the screws out that mount it and the skid plates on the bottom, otherwise, good looking work.

Basher bumper

PostAuthor: millzee on Sat Jul 31, 2010 10:20 am

ok so today I made up the support for the rear bumper and made up front basher bumper, had fun, adds a little weight but it's not like I'm racing for my country or anything.

Re: another bumper, this one for my chevy body

PostAuthor: millzee on Sun Aug 01, 2010 7:55 am

I was playing around with my truck and when I tried the chevy body, it wouldn't fit with my basher bumper so today I made another in order to fit with both bodies. I also made up a new support bracket so it can be used with both bodies or simply undo three bolts and change bumpers when changing lids. The new design bumper is lighter than my first and should still offer good protection.

I've just drawn up some plans to make up my own roll cage, Im a little unsure about it with the extra wieght and so forth but hey I'll make it and see what happens. I think I have about 350-400 grams to play with after taking off the stock wheels so it shouldn't be too bad.

Re: whats the average wieght of most roll cages?

PostAuthor: millzee on Fri Aug 06, 2010 9:05 am

Im just making up my roll cage and was wondering what the average weight of most brand cages? If anyone knows the weights of the larger roll cages please let me know so I'll know what to aim for. The cage I'm building will be quiet large, protecting shock towers, shocks, pipe, slipper cover, motor, air filter, fuel tank, receiver box, hell it's almost an alluminum body at this stage! Please help me out with a goal weight! any weights of cages will help give me a guide line

New wing mount

PostAuthor: millzee on Sat Aug 21, 2010 9:41 am

I've been getting a few projects done and have a few pics and questions. I'll start with my wing mount, after getting sick of mending and replacing wing mounts I've come up with my own, need to try it yet but I hope it'll be ok.
wing mount1.JPG

I added a metal threaded rod to give the alluminum a little extra support
wing mount2.JPG

The Losi wing fits well and I'll make the mount posts adjustable so I can have options
wing mount3.JPG

I'll finish it all of once I get the other few things done

I drew up some plans for a roll cage and have almost finished, lots more polishing still to be done and I think it'll be great over the summer months to keeps the internals safe while driving with no lid although Im not sure how it'll go land upside down after a 15ft jump, but hey im sure most things get damaged when they dont land the way there supose to.

a few more angles:

and after fitting I thought I'd better throw it on the scales:
fitted 6.JPG

it weighed in at 11lb and after weighing the motor, tranny, fuel tank and other parts to go back on I estimate the truck to weigh about 14.5lb

I tried to make sure there is plenty of air flow through the body with a large window at the front and rear

I had to make a few mods on the new body for it to fit easly onto the cage but it turned out good:

body fitted1.JPG

body fitted3.JPG

The body fit's behind the front bumper snug, theres about 2cm clearance from the bottom of the wing mount and after a little dremel work on the rear of the body it fits around the mount legs.

All in all I think it's turned out ok, now I just have to wait to my replacement diff parts, my M2C clutch is in the mail along with a couple of sets of rc raven springs and a heap of other goodies and then Im done, or at least until I kill the motor by making it push around a 14.5lb truck with big wheels.

Do you think this truck is too heavy for my bashing? Will the extra weight cause me motor, drivetrain or other damage that Im yet to find out about?
Im thinking when I do kill the 454 of getting a lrp 30, I see most of you blokes have them so they must be alright! I will only want rotor/spin start, will this be a good motor for this truck?? What model motor is the better?? Im thinking brushless sounds good but I think I'll just stick to killing motors and learning more about the truck b4 I get to far in over my head.

still lots of polishing of the alluminum to be done but I thought I'd have a rest and give it a few trial runs b4 making the effort.
